Penetrameters (Plate Type)
Description
Most American Inspection Standards specify the use of a PLATE TYPE Penetrameter.
These are fabricated from material radiographically similar to the test piece, in the form of a rectangular plaque, equal to 2% of the specimen thickness, with three drilled holes equal to 1X, 2X and 4X the thickness of the Penetrameter. Because of the difficulty in drilling very small holes in thin material, the minimum diameter of these holes are 0.010", 0.020" and 0.040" respectively. Penetrameters greater than 0.180" thickness are in the form of a disc, the outside diameter of which is equal to 4 times the thickness with two drilled holes equal to 1X and 2X the thickness of the Penetrameter. Each Penetrameter is Colour Coded to indicate material type and chemically etched to identify material type and thickness. Lead (Pb.) markers bonded to the surface, correspond either to the Penetrameter thickness (ASME spec.) or, for some specifications, the actual thickness of the testpiece.
